Kungsholm Fortress was built in the 1680s to guard the sea approach to Karlskrona, and it’s still a military area today. That’s why you can’t just turn up: the only way in is on a guided tour, by boat from Karlskrona, in summer.

The tour takes you through thick stone walls, narrow passages and inner yards. The round harbour, closed in by walls on all sides, is the part most people remember. You’re out in the archipelago the whole time, and on the trip over and back it’s easy to see why the fortress was put here.

Good to know

  • Tours run in summer only and fill up, so book ahead.
  • Bring ID. Because it’s a military area, you’ll be asked to show it.
  • There are uneven stones and steps, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • The tour takes most of a morning or an afternoon, including the boat.

It’s the one to choose if you liked the naval museum and want to see the real thing. Combine it with an evening in Karlskrona.
